Tips to Beat the Cold

When the mercury plunges, follow these simple tips to stay warm and enjoy your time on the slopes.

Cover up

One of the most important steps you can take to stay warm and safe on the slopes is to cover all exposed skin, especially your face. Wear a gaiter, balaclava, or face mask, plus goggles, to keep wind and cold off your face. Remember that the effects of wind chill are only felt on bare skin – so cover up.

One pair of quality socks

It may be counterintuitive, but one pair of merino wool or synthetic ski socks will keep your toes warmer than cramming two pairs of socks into your boots and hampering circulation. Since you'll only be wearing one pair, make sure to choose good quality socks. On the coldest days, add a pair of toe warmers to extend your time on the slopes.

Protect your head

You probably know that helmets keep you safe by protecting from impact, but they also protect you from cold, wind and moisture better than a hat. Today’s helmets are incredibly light, comfortable and warm, so upgrade your lid to stay comfortable in all conditions.

Layer up

A series of layers will trap more of your precious body heat than one big coat, so do what the pros do and layer up. A moisture wicking base layer, followed by insulating mid layers of fleece, poly fill or down, all topped with a wind and waterproof shell will keep you comfortable in any condition you're likely to encounter.

Choose mittens

Mittens are always the warmest choice because they let your fingers snuggle together, trapping all the warmth in one place. Add a pair of chemical hand warmers for about $3 and say goodbye to cold fingers.

Fuel the furnace

Take frequent breaks in cold weather and be sure to grab a snack and stay hydrated. Your body needs fuel and fluids to stay warm so keep the calories and water flowing throughout the day.
